Older Workforce Management Policies and Degenerative Disease Risks in Labor Intensive Industries
Keywords:

Aging workforces in labor intensive industries require systematic management policies addressing physical decline and degenerative disease risks. This study constructs a conceptual framework explaining how job redesign, flexible working hours, and periodic health screening influence productivity and retention of workers over 50. A systematic literature review method was applied following established qualitative research procedures. Job redesign reduces physical strain through task modification, ergonomic equipment, and optimized layout design. Flexible hours accommodate changing circadian rhythms and recovery needs of aging workers. Periodic health screening enables early detection of hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis, and cardiovascular conditions. Productivity metrics must incorporate quality and problem solving contributions beyond simple output per hour. Retention depends on financial and non financial factors including respect, involvement in decisions, and mentoring opportunities. Workplace exercise programs maintain aerobic capacity and muscle strength with gradual progression principles. Material flow redesign reduces excessive movement that fatigues workers with limited mobility. Partnerships with local health facilities improve access to preventive care and treatment services. Proactive musculoskeletal injury prevention through ergonomic analysis is more effective than rehabilitation. Cognitive job demands require redesign due to age related declines in processing speed and working memory. Interventions begin with low cost adjustments before major capital investments.
